The Long Island Contractors’ Association (LICA) Annual Federal & State Infrastructure Summit brought together over 200 industry leaders and elected officials, to discuss issues ranging  from transportation funding to the prospects of future infrastructure projects on Long Island.

After many casual and candid discussions over breakfast, LICA was pleased to introduce two of our featured speakers - Congresswoman Kathleen Rice (D-4th C.D.) and Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-1st C.D.) - who gave us their views on infrastructure issues from a federal level. With members of both political parties agreeing that a long-term solution for our nation’s infrastructure is vital and necessary, we hope that their sentiments will turn into real action as the government works to find a solution to the underfunded Highway Trust Fund, before the May 31 expiration date.

Our third guest speaker, NYSDOT Commissioner Joan McDonald, spoke in greater detail about more “concrete” issues, such as the current NYS budget discussions and specific infrastructure issues in our region. The Commissioner recognized that another brutal winter in the Northeast has only accentuated the infrastructure problems we face, with local and state roads falling into greater disrepair due to the extreme weather.
